Tale of Two Cities – read in high school and loved it. I got about halfway through the Pickwick Papers once and liked it, but got busy with other things. I’d like to return to it sometime, though.

The only thing I can think is that all these people listing “A Tale of Two Cities” and “Great Expectations” have never read Dickens’s masterpiece (and Dickens’s own personal favorite among all his books) “David Copperfield”.

Of course I loved A TALE OF TWO CITIES and GREAT EXPECTATIONS and OLIVER TWISTS (and pretty much all the Dickens I’ve read because, well, he’s amazing)….but my all-time favorite, the one I re-read every year, is A CHRISTMAS CAROL.

A Christmas Carol. I need to read more by him though. Not sure how I got through high school English classes AND college without reading more. Thanks so much for the chance to win!

“A Christmas Carol” is definitely the best. Read and/or listen to it every year. Just finished an audio version with all the parts done by Jonathan Winters.

My favorite Dickens book is definitely A TALE OF TWO CITIES. I read it freshman year in high school and totally loved the whole experience.
This would be my first Matthew Pearl book, and I think it sounds fascinating. Thanks for the chance to win a copy!

My favorite Dickens novel is A Christmas Carol. My father used to read the book to my brother and I every Christmas. We’d then go see a stage performance as part of our family Christmas tradition.

I suppose it’s okay (please don’t throw tomatoes at me!) to admit that I am not a Dickens lover, but I did love reading Matthew Pearl’s charming mystery. Of the Dickens novels I’ve read, I prefer A Christmas Carol.

My favorite Dickens is “Dombey and Son.”
I’ve only read one Dickens, GREAT EXPECTATIONS! I read it this summer as part of Book on the Nightstand’s Beowulf on the Beach Summer Reading Challenge. I picked that book over Bleak House because it was the shorter of the two. That said, as clever as a wordsmith as Charles Dickens may be, the constant cleverness got to be a bit wearing and so it still felt like a really long book! Even though I ended up not liking it as much as I had hoped, I’m still glad I read it and I’ve got A CHRISTMAS CAROL on my TBR stack.
