Callie has been in love with Mark for as long as she can remember. The fact that he’s now her boss makes things a little difficult, but she can’t help but remember that, one year ago, they had a five-week relationship that was absolutely perfect. That is, until Mark told her that the timing wasn’t right for him and broke things off. Callie has been patiently waiting for Mark to come to his senses, but as she turns thirty, she’s beginning to realize that maybe she needs to move on with her life.
Sometimes, I’m not really in the mood for dense literary fiction. I just want something easy that will make me laugh and put me in a good mood, feeling that all is right with the world. Kristan Higgins’ books have always done just that for me, so it was with excitement that I started All I Ever Wanted.
I really loved the character of Callie. She was warm and had a good sense of humor. She wasn’t afraid to laugh at herself, which I really appreciated. I loved how much she tried to help others, how much of herself she had to give. Particularly, her relationship with her grandfather, Noah, whom she moved in with to care for after he lost his leg, is really touching. Noah is surly and grumpy, and Callie yells right back at him. They have a great relationship, and you can tell how much they love each other.
Mark was a pretty despicable person, though I didn’t have trouble telling why Callie loved him. He was great at manipulating her, at getting her to do exactly what he wanted. He’d just turn on the charm, and Callie would think that maybe, just maybe, they had a chance and end up doing what he wanted. It was pretty disgusting and made me hate him for Callie’s sake. To her credit, though, Higgins doesn’t make Callie pathetic when it comes to Mark. It’s very gratifying to eventually watch her stand up for herself.
When I was reading All I Ever Wanted, all I could think was that it would make an excellent movie. It’s the perfect romantic comedy. If you’re in the mood for a rom com or chick flick, but want it in book form, Kristan Higgins is the author you need to seek out. Her books are always fun and leave the reader with a smile on their face. I highly recommend this novel if you’re looking for something light and entertaining.
