Best of 2010 by Genre: Part 2 of 2

And without further ado…the third and final part of my Best of 2010 series!

I’ve already posted my Best of 2010: South Asian Edition and my Best of 2010 by Genre: Part 1 of 2.  On this list, you’ll find the genres literary fiction, mystery/crime fiction, contemporary fiction, and teen/YA.

Literary Fiction

I read a good amount of literary fiction in 2011, but much of it was of the South Asian variety, which is why this list is shorter than I expected.

Mystery/Suspense/Crime Fiction

I like to think of 2010 as my “mystery” year.  I dove deep into this genre, reading as much as I could.  I read some amazing books and started some amazing series this year, and hope to keep doing so in 2011, as I’ve enjoyed it so much.

Contemporary Fiction

Oh, the ubiquitous “contemporary fiction” genre which seems to be code for “I have no idea where to stick this book in terms of genre definition.”  That’s a good thing, in this case – these books defy genre conventions and make for gripping reads.

Teen/YA

I began to shy away from YA this year because I had some trouble with the basics of many books in the genre (the love story, the impetuousness of teens, etc.)  Books like the following keep bringing me back to the genre (still LOVE those dystopians, after all.)

Comments

  1. Oh I COMPLETELY agree with you on the YA books! Those are the three I would choose (though I chose Before I Fall as my one favorite YA).

  7. The only book from your lists that I’ve read is Trespass and I’m afraid I wasn’t a big fan. 🙁

I keep seeing Before I Fall mentioned so am going to have to try it at some point; I hope I enjoy it as much as everyone else seems to.

    have a wonderful 2011!

  13. I liked The Distant Hours but haven’t read any of Morton’s others yet. I’m currently reading Delirium by Lauren Oliver, and I have a feeling I’ll want to go back and read Before I Fall once I’m done! Possession is on my 2011 reading list as well. Thanks for sharing your picks!

  17. The Irresistible Henry House made my year-end list too. I’m so glad I’m not the only one who appreciated it!

  19. Phew! I’ve read several of these and agree that they belong on a best-of list — inparticular

    Carrie Ryan
    Julia Spencer-Fleming
    Kingdom of Ohio (Matthew Flaming)

  21. Trespass and Singers Gun were excellent. Not a fan of Possession (although it is one of my mother’s favorite books) but I did like The Children’s Book. I will have to look into My Wife’s Affair and The Kingdom of Ohio.

  23. Some great books here, Swapna. I love Kate Morton…and I was happy to see you like Zoe Ferraris’s first book (have you read the second book in the series yet? It is just as good!)

So many wonderful books in 2010!
