Summary:

In the second book in the Manor House Mystery series (after Grace Under Pressure), Grace Wheaton has recovered from her mentor’s murder and is successfully managing as curator of Marshfield Manor. When the manor opens its grounds to a large group of Civil War re-enactors, Grace thinks nothing of it.  That is, until one of the leaders of the group is found dead, and Grace once again finds herself in the middle of a murder investigation.

Review:

Grace Interrupted picks up a few months after the previous novel in the series, with Grace comfortably settled at Marshfield Manor.  The primary characters of the novel – Grace, Bennett, Jack, Frances – have already been established, but Hyzy does a wonderful job refreshing our memories and forging new territory with each of these people.  Jack gets some in depth treatment in this novel; the reader really comes to understand him better and gets a glimpse of his difficult past.  At the same time, though, he’s not an easy character to like, especially in his quasi-relationship with Grace.  I appreciate how complex Hyzy has made each of these people and how carefully she has crafted them.

The mystery in Grace Interrupted is intriguing and keeps the reader guessing.  The fact that there are countless Civil War reenacting guests on the premises means that there are many different suspects, but Hyzy really makes sure to set apart the important characters. The fact that Jack has a personal tie to the murdered man only serves to heighten suspense; it’s a well-crafted plot, and readers will be hooked from beginning to end.

If you’re searching for a well-written and engaging cozy mystery, look no further – the Manor House Mystery has exactly what you’re looking for! Both of these novels are quick and thoroughly entertaining, and there are only two books in the series right now so it will be easy to get caught up! And if you’re looking for more cozy mysteries, Hyzy’s White House Chef series is also an excellent pick.
