BookTube: “News-y” Books

Over at Book Riot’s BookTube channel, I’m talking about 5 “News-y” books about current events, issues, and the news that I’ve either enjoyed or am looking forward to reading.

Books Mentioned:

Storm Surge: Hurricane Sandy, Our Changing Climate, and Extreme Weather of the Past and Future by Adam Sobel
Newsfail: Climate Change, Feminism, Gun Control, and Other Fun Stuff We Talk About Because Nobody Else Will by Jamie Kilstein and Allison Kilkenny
The News Sorority: Diane Sawyer, Katie Couric, Christiane Amanpour and the (Ongoing, Imperfect, Complicated) Triumph of Women in TV News by Sheila Weller
More Awesome Than Money: Four Boys and Their Heroic Quest to Save Your Privacy from Facebook by Jim Dwyer
The Price of Silence: The Duke Lacrosse Scandal, the Power of the Elite, and the Corruption of Our Great Universities by William D. Cohan

  1. I’ve enjoyed newsy books in the past such as Joel Achenbach’s A Hole at the Bottom of the Sea about the Deepwater Horizon disaster and the resulting BP oil spill. I think it’s helpful to read these types of books because they often have the time and distance to give a new look at events that we previously experienced in daily soundbytes. Then also, a book treatment of current issues can often get into depth the way that a Facebook post on that same topic could not. šŸ™‚
